Denver Divorce Help

While we do not get married with the intention that we will get divorced in the future, the truth of the matter is that people change. Our lives change as well, making what originally worked as a marriage no longer a viable option for any party involved. If either party wishes to legally end the marriage, they must do so by filing a petition for dissolution of marriage. The general timeline of a divorce in Denver, Colorado may go as follows:

  • The summons and petition for dissolution of marriage are filed with the court by the petitioning spouse. The other spouse is served. The spouse that was served divorce papers will then have 20 days to file a response, at which point it is important to document your assets and get your financial documents in order and make preliminary arrangements regarding where you and your children will live.
  • Mandatory financial disclosures are required 20 days after the response is filed or 40 days after the petition is filed if the spouse does not file a response.
  • Most divorces in Denver are resolved within 3 to 5 months of the initial petition if an agreement is reached wither between the parties or through mediation.   However, there are some cases where spouses will be unable to reach their own agreements. In these cases it could take as long at 18 months to get a final hearing before a judge. This is when they should seek mediation as a means of resolving disputes and possibly a final hearing before a judge. In a contested divorce, the process always take a lot longer, causes a great deal more stress, and becomes extremely expensive.
